HB 2017 - Housing Justice Act

Currently in Washington state, landlords are allowed to use criminal history as a tool to deny someone tenancy. We want to ban that practice.

The Housing Justice Act would bar the landlord to advertise or have a policy that would automatically exclude a person with an arrest record or conviction record from rental housing. They will not be able to require disclosure or inquire this information from a perspective tenant, tenant, or a member of the tenant's family. Any violation from this bill will be protected by the Consumer Protection Act.

We believe that everyone deserves housing and having a criminal history or arrest record does not determine how one will be as a tenant.
